​With the Covid-19 pandemic shaping the way companies are hiring, it is more important than ever for job seekers to get comfortable and competent with video interviews. The principles of traditional interviews still stand, but a few adjustments can give your video interviews the boost you need to stand out from other applicants. Practice combined with a positive mindset will provide you the success you need. Check out our tips for a successful video interview and secure your next role...

1. Get to know the tech.  

Once you know what platform your interview will be hosted on, make sure you download it before hand. Watch a tutorial to understand how you navigate the platform to ensure you are confident using it before your interview.

2. Consider the setting for your Interview.

Choose a location that is free from distractions, has a strong Wifi/internet connection and has a simple background. You need to ensure interviewers are focused on you rather than what is going on in the background of your video.

3. Dress appropriately. 

Dress as you would for a face-to-face interview, and this doesn't mean a blazer and pyjama bottoms. Dressing professionally will put you in the right frame of mind for your interview. 

4. Documents. 

Have the appropriate documents printed for your video, such as your C.V. and job description. It is also handy to have your email open in the background in case you need to share any documents with the interviewer. 

5. Headphones. 

Rather than relying on your speaker, invest in a pair of headphones as they tend to reduce background noise and feedback. 

6. Username. 

For most video interviews, you will need to create a username for the platform if you haven't already got an account. Think about what kind of first impression you want to create.

7. Lighting. 

Before the interview, have a trail run where you dress in your interview clothes, log onto the video interview and test the angle of the lighting. Avoid being shrouded in shadow by positioning the camera in front facing light as this will be the most flattering for brightening your facial features. 

8. Body language. 

Keeping engaged with the interviewer is key, looking into the camera rather than your image on-screen will help you look as engaged as possible. Allow for a measured distance between you and the camera will allow for the interviewer to read your body language. Sit with your back straight, feet on the ground, and arms resting in your lap or on the desk. 

9. Camera.

Rather than looking down at your laptop, try elevating the camera so that you are looking straight forward and talking as though you would be in a face-to-face interview. 

10. Close the interview. 

As with any mobile or face-to-face interviews, show the interviewer your appreciation for their time and interview and ask what (if any) reservations they would have about moving you to the next stage of the interview process.
