1. What initially got you into recruitment?

I had a baptism of fire when it came to sales and joined a company where I was tasked with selling insurance for sky boxes and sky remote controls. You can imagine some of the reactions I got when I was cold calling people out of the blue, asking them if they had insurance for their Sky TV remote control. It did however teach me that I enjoyed sales and influencing outcomes. I didn’t see myself doing that for too long and decided to look for a new challenge that involved a more complex sell and my then boss put me in touch with his friend who worked at a recruitment business.

2. What are your favourite things about working at Finlay James?

Probably the straightforwardness, can do attitude, and transparency. I joined the business just as the UK was thrust into our first lockdown. I was immediately impressed by the level headedness of the team around me and how they quickly stripped things down to the basics and ensured we were doing all of those things as well as possible whilst we navigated our way through what was then, the unknown.

3. What goals do you have for the next 5 years?

Right now five years is too far away. Over the next 12 months, my goal is to have our London office firing on all cylinders with a team of ambitious future leaders.

4. What do you recommend to someone who is just starting up in recruitment?

One of my former co-workers, used to always say to himself “remember why you started.” I think if anyone is ever having a tough time, ask yourself that question and it quickly clears things up.

5. Describe your perfect, non-work day.

I have a twelve-week-old daughter, so if I don’t say spending it with her and my partner it’s not worth me going home tonight. If I can include a long bike ride and an Everton win into the mix, it’s a good day!
